BIG DRAW FOR OKANAGAN WFC EVALUATIONS
October 28, 2008
Over 250 players packed Beasley Fields in Lake Country, Kelowna on the weekend for the 2009 Okanagan Whitecaps FC Super Y League Day evaluations.
Players from across the Thompson Okanagan including Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton, Salmon Arm and Kamloops were out vying for a place on this years Okanagan WFC U13 to U16 Super Y League teams.
“We were very pleased with the overwhelming excitement and enthusiasm for this years teams” said Okanagan WFC Technical Director Chris Bennett, a former Whitecaps FC and national team player and coach. “This is all about growing soccer development in the Okanagan and providing even greater profile and opportunities for Okanagan players.”
After holding regional meetings, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in partnership with the British Columbia Soccer Association (BCSA), have collaborated with the Central Okanagan Youth Soccer Association (COYSA), North Okanagan Youth Soccer Association (NOYSA), and South Okanagan Youth Soccer Association (SOYSA), Shuswap Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) and Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) to form Okanagan WFC for the 2009 Super Y League Season.
As part of these collaborative efforts, this past weekend’s evaluation included Okanagan WFC staff, as well as staff from the Vancouver Whitecaps and BCSA, to provide an opportunity for local players to “get noticed” for not only the Super Y League, but also Whitecaps Residency and Prospects programs and BCSA Provincial teams.
The selected Okanagan WFC Super Y League teams will start a training program that runs November through February and will include fitness and skills training in preparation for the start of the Super Y League season in May of 2009.
